How do you start being eco friendly?

What is my carbon footprint?

Are there other ways to become greener beside recycling?

Most of us asked one of these questions, but what are the answers to them?

Today, we will get the answers to them and calculate our carbon footprints together!

Where do I start?

Let's start with something easy, reducing our waste!

Reduce our waste

The first "R" in the R's is "reduce", the task that most of us fail to make it.

Ways to reduce your waste

  1. Don't buy things that you will never use, they are useless.
  2. Use reusable bags, this is the simplest solution that will cut most of your waste.
  3. Start relying on reusable containers, made from glass.
  4. Stop buying plastic bottles, you can buy a durable water bottle and use it up to 5+ years!
Bottled water companies do not produce water, they produce plastic bottles.

Repair broken things

Learn to repair, not to throw; repairing is an important skill, which can save you a lot of money.

But most of us will throw the item straight into the bin, because we are "Too lazy" or because we don't have time for this, but why to throw something into the bin if it can be easily repaired?

After you reduced your waste, the next step is to reuse the things you currently have.

Try to think about what you can create with an old thing

Then execute your idea, and try if it's working. If you didn't come up with an idea, you can read this Wiki How or try to:

Ask other people

You can always ask other people what to do with things you don't need.

There is a community on Reddit that will help you to decide what to do with your old things:

Recycling bins in Singapore
Recycling bins in Singapore

Every human produces some kind of garbage, it can be natural like plant waste, or man-made like plastic or metal.

So how you recycle each of them? Let's find out!

Identify the type

Note: if the waste is natural, please go to the bottom section

First, we need to identify our garbage. Try to find a recycling symbol on the product that you need to get rid of.

If you found one, congratulations 🎉. You can now dispose of it into the right recycling bin. If you didn't found one, ask your local recycling services what to do with that product.

What I do if the waste is natural?

If the waste is natural, you will need a composter.

Buy or make a composter

Cleaning up your local areas from garbage

Pile of waste can hurt in many ways:

  1. Animals, which can think that it's food.
  2. Soil, that her quality will be reduced.
  3. Air pollution, because of organic waste.
  4. Visual and health impacts.

We can stop this by cleaning up waste from the environment. We made a tutorial about How to collect trash

Use green energy and save it

Green energy is a great way to save money and reduce your carbon footprint, and there are many types of it:

Renewable energy types
Renewable energy types

There are two types of renewable energy that you can easily set up in your home:

Solar Panels

Choose a location where you want to install them. You can install them in your back yard or on top of your house.

Top solar panel manufacturers
  1. SunPower
  2. LG Solar
  3. REC Solar
  4. CSUN
  5. Solaria
How much watts can solar panel generate?

The power that solar panel can generate is ranging from 285 up to 430 watts.

How many solar panels cost?

Solar panels are pretty expensive, 1 solar panel price can range from $150 to $250, but there are more affordable prices range from $10 to $30 for one flexible solar panel.

Wind turbines

You can make a DIY wind turbine to get electricity from wind, and even get more electricity:

Note: You can make the wind turbine from any waterproof flexible material

Energy from... POOP?

Yeah, you heard it right, you can make energy from poop! In the residents of Pachacamac, a Peruvian village outside Lima, there are thousand fluffy, tailless guinea pigs.

And from their poop, the village get energy!

Switch your lightbulbs to energy-efficient ones

Energy-efficient lightbulbs use about 25%-80% less energy and last 3-25 times longer than traditional lightbulbs, saving you money. Learn more

Wash laundry in cold water instead of hot

If the cloth doesn't need warm water, use cold instead. It will save you money.

Start a garden

If you have a place that you own, you can start a garden with a couple of fruit and vegetables, that will bring in insects and income.

You can build it from unused materials; you can use wood from any construction area, or other waste that can be used to build it.

Why to build one?

You should build one because before the food gets to your plate, it needs to travel a long distance in a vehicle, which causes pollution.

Also, it will cost you less money to eat locally grown food than food from grocery store shelves.

Start a campaign / charity

To start a campaign, firstly, you need to determinate your goals. Create a list where all your goals will be listed.

After you listed your goals, you will need to bring in more people. Ask people to join your campaign and help you with it. Some campaign ideas:

  1. Zero organic waste
  2. Bring insects back
  3. No garbage outside the bin
  4. Green energy city
  5. Repairing centre

The steps of creating a charity are very similar to creating a campaign. You need to start by choosing a topic for charity, then encouraging people to donate to your charity.

But before this, you need to start your charity without donations, so people will see that you are serious about doing it.

Some charity ideas:

  1. 1$ equals one tree or 1 k"g of garbage
  2. Green energy installation

Find a green alternative to driving

Cars are playing a big role in air pollution, the processes of manufacturing, fueling, and building roads for cars to drive on all pollute the air in different ways.

There are a couple of alternatives that you can use:

  • Tesla - All of their factories is powered from green energy
  • Biking
  • Walking
  • Public transportation - Bus, subway or train

Stop using toxic chemicals!

Most of the cleaning and makeup products include chemicals, which harms humans, wildlife and the environment.

Use eco-friendly substances when you cleaning your home. You can also try making your own.

  1. White vinegar + water
  2. Baking soda
  3. Use natural versions of shampoos, conditioners, makeup and other body products

Stop smoking

Not only cigarettes causing air and ground pollution, but they are also the most littered item in the world!

Meat is produced under conditions that harm the environment, causing air and water pollution. Not only that but meat full of hormones that are unhealthy for animals and humans.

How to calculate your carbon footprint

After you know how to become eco-friendly, let's calculate your carbon footprint!

What is the carbon footprint?

Carbon footprint, amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with all the activities of a person or other entity (e.g., building, corporation, country, etc.). It includes direct emissions, such as those that result from fossil-fuel combustion in manufacturing, heating, and transportation, as well as emissions required to produce the electricity associated with goods and services consumed. In addition, the carbon footprint concept also often includes the emissions of other greenhouse gases, such as methane, nitrous oxide, or chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

The steps to calculate your carbon footprint

  1. Go to the website
  2. Hover to "calculate" and select the first option
  3. Enter all the details that the website will need to calculate your footprint
  4. After you know your carbon footprint, you can track it
